Artist Statement
In my paintings and drawings, I create an airy watery world in which a multitude of imaged creatures come into being. I use a variety of media: pen and brush, charcoal, colored pencil, oil, watercolor and acrylic on paper or canvas.
I grew up in Japan with a father who was a microbiologist. As a child, I loved the unseen world he unveiled for me through the microscope. We spent weekends either poring over the microscope, or taking long rambles through the countryside. My current work is inspired by images I collect from the science and nature magazines - animals, flowers, insects, and micro-organisms. It is this mysterious world of abundant energy and life in all its myriad forms that I summon in my paintings and drawings. I step aside to let intuition and an unbridled spirit of invention guide me. The essential voice in my work is one of humor, whimsy, playfulness, and wonder.
